CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

THEA

I didn’t stop to think. I just ran into the next room, wet hair soaking the back of my T-shirt. As soon as I spotted Julian lounging in a club chair by the window, I remembered he’d been speaking to Celia. I glanced around the spacious apartment, but there was no sign of her.

“Did she leave?” I asked.

Julian looked up from the drink he nursed and nodded. “She’s gone.”

An ominous current ran through his words, and I tamped down the excitement bubbling inside me. “What’s wrong? What did she need to speak with you about?”

“Nothing. Security issues. Rumors. Most of it doesn’t make sense yet.” He beckoned me with a curled finger. His gloves were gone, which was a relief considering I’d forgotten to put mine back on. When I moved to him, he patted his lap. I sank onto it, burrowing against his muscular chest.

“What does yet mean?” I murmured.

“It means I’m trying to figure it all out.” He kissed my forehead. “I told her about Camila.”

“How did that go?” I couldn’t control my surprise.

“She needed to know. Anyone connected to me should know,” he said absently. “She was upset and a little bit confused. But now she’s aware of the threat.”

“Do you really think Camila is a threat?” We’d avoided talking of her since the day she attacked me.

“Yes, I do,” he said quietly. “The woman who called me wasn’t my sister. She was a stranger.”

“She saved your life,” I reminded him.

“And tried to hurt you.” His lip curled with disgust. “Camila is a threat. I’m just not looking forward to telling the rest of the family.”

“I know.” All the joy I’d felt a few minutes ago flattened. I tried to shove my new cellphone into the pocket of my jeans, but Julian noticed.

“What is it?” he asked quietly. “Did you hear from your mother?”

I shook my head, my stomach twisting. My mother had been on the list of people I’d reached out to with my new phone number, along with instructions to ignore any calls or texts from my old number. She hadn’t responded to me yet—probably since I hadn’t texted the exact words she wanted to hear.

“No. It’s not important.” I leaned to kiss him, but he moved away.

“Tell me.”

“I received word from Lassiter. I graduated.” It felt so silly and inconsequential given what we were dealing with, but Julian wrapped his arms around me.

“I knew you would.” He beamed.

“With honors,” I added. “I can’t believe it. Not after I missed so much coursework.” I swiveled to face him. “You really didn’t bribe anyone to let me pass?”

“I only bribed them to reverse your course withdrawal for the semester. You did this on your own,” he said firmly. “When is the ceremony?”

“I’m not going,” I said with a laugh that earned me a frown.

“Why not?”

“It’s not important to me.” I shrugged. “And it’s on Sunday.”

“Would you have gone to your graduation ceremony if you hadn’t met me?” he asked.

“Probably, but only…” I swallowed as tears thickened my throat “.
